From Pigeon Playground to Proper Car Park That Tenants Could Finally Use.

Some jobs start with a simple complaint. This one started with a car park that people had basically given up on.
At a site we manage in Harrow, the car park was seriously under-utilised for one reason: pigeons. And not the occasional “bit of mess” either. We’re talking cars being hit constantly, floors covered, and over time the droppings had built up and hardened into actual mounds. The kind you don’t just “hose down and hope for the best”.
To make it even worse, the site is home to an NHS centre, so hygiene and presentation are not optional. The bin store had become a hiding spot for pigeons too, with droppings all over the bins and surrounding surfaces. Not ideal in any setting, but especially not in a clinical environment.
So we got to work.
What We Found On Site
The main issues were clear the moment we inspected:
Heavy pigeon fouling on vehicles and across the car park floor
Hardened, stuck-on build-up that had formed over time
A bin store being used as a pigeon hangout, with bins and walls heavily soiled
Overgrown vegetation around the perimeter, adding to the neglected feel and giving cover
Poor lighting in the car park, making it less usable and less welcoming
This wasn’t a quick tidy. This needed a proper reset.
Stage 1: Deep Clean and Decontamination
First, we tackled the mess head-on. We carried out a full deep clean of the car park and the surrounding perimeter areas.
That included:
Applying strong cleaning solutions to break down the bird waste
Scraping the hardened build-up from the floors
Thorough jet washing of the car park surfaces
Jet washing and deep cleaning the bin store to bring it back to a hygienic standard
And we didn’t stop there.
Stage 2: Going the Extra Mile on the Bin Store
We decided to go one step further and properly finish the job. So we:
Scrubbed and jet washed all the bins themselves
Cleared the bin store area so it was clean, usable and presentable again
It’s a small detail, but it makes a massive difference to the people using the building every day.
Stage 3: Clear the Perimeter and Cut Back the Growth
With the cleaning underway, we also cut back all the overgrown vegetation and perimeter growth. This helped tidy the site up visually, but also removed areas where pigeons could hide and linger.
Stage 4: Stop the Pigeons Coming Back
Cleaning is one thing, but bird problems only stay solved if you deal with the root cause.
So we fitted pigeon netting to the roof of the car park, stopping pigeons from perching above the vehicles and preventing the same issue from happening again. The aim was simple: stop the mess at source.
Stage 5: Make the Car Park Usable Again
To round it off, we also got the car park lighting working again. It hadn’t been working previously, and it’s one of those things that quietly puts people off using a space.
Now, the workers and tenants can use the car park properly, safely, and without their cars getting ruined.
The Result
The car park is now:
Clean
Protected
Hygienic
Properly lit
And finally being used again the way it should be
No more constant fouling, no more mounds on the floor, and no more bin store nightmare.
If you’ve got a site with a pigeon problem (or any bird-related “takeover”), we can help get it under control properly, clean-up, prevention, and long-term maintenance so it stays sorted.
